Incidence and prevalence study on Hidradenitis Suppurativa

What we do

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic and disabling disease which true prevalence in general population is little known, with estimates ranging from less than 0.1% up to 4%.

According to data collected in the first Italian Registry Hidradenitis suppurativa (see IRHIS Project) between 2009 and 2013, the estimated population prevalence is about 0.06% and incidence 3,2 cases per 100.000 people/year. Such data refer to a limited geographic area, the province of Ferrara.

To estimate the prevalence and incidence of HS in different geographical areas representative of the Italian population, Centro Studi GISED coordinated a research project focusing on three geographic areas: the provinces of Bergamo, Ferrara and Cagliari. To this purpose all GPs in the areas were contacted and asked to provide data on patients they care for with HS.
